Symbiosis Flashcards
Two species of organism live in close association
Mutualism
-Both species benefit
- Both species benefit from the obligatory interaction.
Example- clown fish living in sea anemone (the protect one another). +/+
Cooperation
Each species benefits from the association but the presence of one is not essential to the survival of the other.
Example- sea anemone living on the shell of crabs. +/+
Commensalism
-Sometimes does not have any impact one a species at all
- One benefits while the other is not affected but it is unlikely the other is completely unaffected.
Example- Bacteria living on skin +/?
Amensalism
One species inhibits the other
Example- Antibiotics inhibits the growth of bacteria.
Parasitism
- Benefits 1 species
- Host is hurt by the parasite
Example- Ticks, lice- suck blood +/-
Predation
One population is eaten by another population
Example- cheetah hunting a gazelle or goats eating grass. +/-
Competition
- Negative for both
A rivalry between individuals for a specific resource. Can occur between a number of species.
Example- Kangaroos and sheep compete for grass. -/-
