SWM Program Administrator Flashcards
What is a “Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan”?
A document that is prepared in accordance with good engineering practices and that identifies potential sources of pollutants that may reasonably be expected to affect the quality of stormwater implementation of control measures. It should include or reference and approved erosion and sediment control plan, and approved stormwater management plan, and a pollution prevention plan.
Peak Flow Rate
maximum instantaneous flow from a prescribed design storm at a particular location
Runoff Volume
Volume of water that runs off the land development project from a prescribed storm event
List the types of activities that are exempt from permit application and plan approval
Clearing of land specifically for agricultural purposes, single-family residences separately built and disturbing less than one acres and not part of a common plan of development or sale, Land-disturbing activities that disturb less than one acre of land area except Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act area, or activities that are part of a larger common plan of development or sale that is one acre or greater of disturbance, discharges to sanitary sewer or combined sewer, activities under a State or federal reclamation program, land-disturbing activities in response to a public emergency,
If nutrient credits are used where must they be generated?
Within the same or adjacent eight-digit hydrologic unit code (watershed). If this is not possible nutrient credits can only be used if they are in the same tributary.
What is a “common plan of development or sale”?
A contiguous area where separate and distinct construction activities may be taking place at different times on different schedules.
What is the average annual rainfall across Virginia?
42-48”
What characteristics influence stromwater runoff quality and quantity?
Any implemented stormwater control measures, land use, precipitation, Natural/built drainage system, Drainage area characteristics (storm/inter-storm)
The frequency of extreme precipitation events in Virginia since 1948 has increased by what percent?
25 percent
In Virginia, a 2-year storm produces how much rain?
2.5 to 5.2 inches in a 24-hour period.
In Virginia, a 1-year storm produces how much rain?
1.9 to 3.2 inches in a 24-hour period.
In Virginia, a 10-year storm produces how much rain?
3.5 to 8 inches in a 24-hour period.
In Virginia, a 100-year storm produces how much rain?
8-9 inches in a 24-hour period.
Traditionally, Virginia has used what design storm for discharges into a natural channel or stream?
2-year / 24 hour
True or False? When stormwater runoff is allowed to drain away instead of being used to recharge the groundwater it alters the hydrologic balance of a watershed?
True
Ecological stress becomes apparent when impervious cover in a watershed reaches between:
10-25%
Increased peak discharges for a developed watershed can be how many times higher than an undisturbed watershed?
2-5 times higher.
First flush makes up what percentage of the annual pollution load?
20%
Which of the following represent human influences on the natural water cycle (all that apply):
A. Groundwater withdrawl
B. Rainfall capture in cisterns for dry period usage
C. Diverting stormwater runoff form steep slopes.
D. Evaporation of water from ocean surfaces to the atmosphere.
E. None of the above.
A., B., & C.
Rainwater harvesting presents an option that could alleviate pressures on water supplies in Virginia. What are some of these pressures?
Water treatment plant capacity, groundwater sources becoming increasingly depleted, decreased stream base flow.
