switched on places Flashcards
what is the dependency theory?
the theory of a 3 tier system maintained by the core countries that helps develop other countries, but only to a certain extent so they don’t catch up
what are core countries?
e.g. UK and USA (urban, processed goods, developed, HICs, tech)
what are semi-periphery countries?
e.g. Mexico and India (NEEs. beginning to spread culture through film and people, developing)
what are periphery countries?
e.g. Chad (undeveloped, agriculture, LICs, rural)
what is a switched-on place?
places with links to other countries, HICs, globalized and have qualities so people want to connect with them
what is a switched-off place?
places with limited links to other countries, often LICs, underdeveloped and isolated.
how does a place become switched off?
- lack of literacy skills
- politically or physically landlocked
- lack of infrasturcture
- famine and disease
- vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters
- conflicts like civil wars
- resources controlled by the small elite or TNCs
- fighting internally over resources
- poor agricultural resources
what is the global network?
links between different countries through flows of trade, people, tech, goods, services and money
what is a global hub?
switched on places that have qualities (ICT, finance, culture, ideas, people, finance, fashion) making it desirable for other places to connect with. They help grow the economy and generate the multiplier effect.
