- Heavy loads of adult worms can cause intestinal obstruction
- ill thrift, weight loss, respiratory symptoms

- Larval stage causes formation of large nodules within wall of large intestine
- anorexia, diarrhea, weight loss, GI disturbances

- anemia, diarrhea, anorexia, ill-thrift, stunted growth

common name - Trichina worm
- larvae found encysted in muscle tissue
- Degree of tissue damage depends on # present & where they occur
- TRICHINELLOSIS - infection is spread when new host eats meat of infected animal, humans acquire infection when they eat improperly cooked meat from infected pigs

common name - threadworm
- diarrhea in young piglets, severe infections can be fatal
Metastrongylus elongatus
common name - lungworms
- persistent cough, poor growth rate, ill-thrift, heavy infections cause respiratory disease
Macrocanthorhynchus hirudinaceus
common name - thorny-headed worm
- Spine attachment may cause rupture of small intestine
Taenie solium
common name - human pork tapeworm
- Human primary host, swine are intermediate host
Humans acquire infection when they eat improperly cooked meat from infected pigs
- at meat inspection – cystcerci present in swine skeletal and cardiac muscle
Cystoisospora suis, Eimeria spp., Balantidium coli, Cryptosporidium spp.
- clinical syndrome called cocciodiosis, diarrhea, dehydrations, weight loss, especially young piglets
- Treatment
B. coli - tetracycline
Eimeria spp. – sulfamethzine
Cystoisospora suis - decoquinate
