Equine Flashcards
1
Q
Parascaris equorum
A
common name - roundworm
clinical signs - most common in foals
- mild infections subclinical
severe = diarrhea, resp. distress, colic
2
Q
S.vulgaris, S. edentaus, S. equinus
A
- large strongyles aka bloodworms or redworms
- hemorrhagic inflammation of GI mucosa with multiple small ulcers
- migratory larva
- Verminous arteritis
- in extreme cases, aorta may be blocked through thrombus formation resulting in paralysis to hind limbs
- S. vulgaris is very pathogenic
3
Q
Small Strongyles - cyathostomes
A
- diarrhea
- can interfere with the normal absorptive processes of GI
- encysted cyathostomes are variably resistant to anthelmintics
- exposed to large numbers of infective larvae in spring & summer through early fall
4
Q
Strongyloides westeri
A
common name - threadworm
- diarrhea, anemia
- usually only seen in foals
5
Q
Oxyuris equi
A
common name - pinworm
- Found in perianal region of equids, causes extreme itchy butt!
6
Q
Dictycocaulus arnfieldi
A
common name - lungworm
- Infections more commonly seen in US, adult worms can cause obstruction of bronchi/bronchioles
- Symptoms usually respiratory in nature, may see bronchitis/pneumonia
7
Q
Habronema spp.
A
common name - stomach worms
- Habronema microstoma, Habronema muscae & Draschia megastoma
- Gastritis from adults affecting growth, SUMMER SORES from aberrant larvae, Ulcerative conjunctivitis from larvae
- SUMMER SORES are lesions resulting from larvae deposited by flies in wounds, found around legs, withers, male genitalia and near the eye
- spontaneously heal in the winter
8
Q
Anoplocephala perfoliata
Anoplocephala magma
Paranoplocephala mamilana
A
common name - tapeworms
- heavy A. perfoliata loads cause damage at ileoceccal junction
9
Q
Fasciola hepatica
A
common name - liver fluke - Acute infections see hepatic trauma and even death “hepatic fascioliasis” (sudden death in sheep) - chronic syndrome (sheep & cattle): weight loss (both) reduced milk yield (cattle) submandibular edema (sheep) - treat with albendazole
10
Q
Eimeria leukarti
A
- a protozoa aka coccidia
- found in small intestine
- Usually asymptomatic and infections usually only seen in young animals
