What is a true swelling on palpatation?
A true swelling is a swelling that is pulsating itself
When palpating what is a false swelling?
A swelling that does not pulsating itself but is overlying an artery
Define tenderness
Pain or discomfort when pressure is applied to the area
Define transmillumination
Illumination of a swelling that contains a clear fluid
What is an aneurysm
A ballooning of a blood vessel caused by a weakness in the vessel wall
What is a diffuse swelling?
A swelling that does not have clear borders
Define erythema
superficial reddening of the skin because of injury or irritation
Define exudate
a pus like fluid that is released around areas of infection
What is goitre?
A swelling of the neck as a result of an enlarged thyroid gland.
Seen in both hyper and hypothyroidism
What is a haematoma?
An abnormal collection of blood outside the circulatory system
What is a hydrocoele?
A build up of serous fluid in a sac
What is oedema?
Excessive collection or accumulation of fluid in tissue
What is a varicocoele?
A mass of varicose veins in the spermatic cord
What are varicose veins?
Enlarged twisted veins that can occur anywhere in the body, are most common in the legs and feet
What is an osteophyte?
A bony lump that grows on the bone around joints or in the spine
