Q

population change - secondary data

A

www. dorsetforyou.com
- large % of pop are over 65
- population increase from 1921-2011 of 2,500 people however decrease from 2010

Q

house price change - secondary data

A

www. dorsetforyou.com
- between 2009 and 2014 all house accommodation prices has increased
- number of housing developments between 1999 and 2010 have decrease, however, could be due to massive gain in popularity during the 90s

Q

change in crime rates - secondary data

A

police. uk and www.dorsetforyou.com
- crime rates have decrease overtime suggesting positive change
- using an official site means statistics are likely to be accurate 2011 august 121 crimes august 2015 5 crimes
- anti social behaviour was highest proportion of crime not its robbery suggestion more affluence?

Q

bi polar survey - primary fieldwork

A
  • environmental quality increases north of Swanage, as does house prices and potential erosion risk

Q

questionnaire - primary fieldwork

A
  • when asking if Swanage has changes over the past 50 years we split into groups to get a larger range and used stratified sampling of older age group as they are more likely to have lived there longer
  • most felt that Swanage has improved with a mean score of 6.6 out of 10
  • however long term residents could be bias

Q

change in land use - primary fieldwork

A
  • we overlapped a landuse map we created onto an OS map of Swanage 2010 from (www.old-maps.co.uk) using GIS software and Boolean logic and compared it to an OS map of Swanage from 1902
  • farm land is largely residential and retail suggesting shift from primary to service industry (higher value)
  • no sea defences present in1902 as they may have been unaware of risk and land was of less value, now the perbeck district council have put in place sea defences to avoid losing £34.5 million worth of infrastructure

Q

interview with mike goater

A
  • member of perpeck district council and chef engineer involved in planning and execution of the coastal defences in Swanage
background: after 2005 storm surges all but 2 meters of the beach had been removes therefore increasing the risk of cliff erosion due to lack of natural defences which would cost £35.4 million in infrastructure loss and income for residents. the perpeck district council decide to raise £5 million to prevent this fro happening after completing a cost benefit analysis.
    what is being done:
  • 18 groynes placed along perimeter of beach made from teak wood, however this has created terminal groyne syndrome leading to increase cliff foot erosion hence 2012 landslide
  • beach replenishment. Sand collected from poole harbour. 128 thousand cubic meters dumped 90 remained. however this is a short term solution and expensive

Q

land use - primary data and secondary house price data

A

using land use map, 1902 map from www.old-maps.co.uk and a geological map from www.bgs.ac.uk you can see that were most of the development has occurred is also where there is sold Wealden bed so it can easily erode. making insurance hard, this could suggest that residents feel that the sea defences are effective as house prices have increase by 3% in the last year

Q

long shore drift

A

to collect the long shore drift data we split into groups as to cover a large area. to measure how well the groynes were working we systematically measured the distance between the sand and the top of the groyne a high, middle and low tide on both side of the groynes to see how much sediment has been trapped. to measure long shore drift we dropped a biodegradable floatation device into the swash of a wave and measured the distance it travelled in a given time . we then mapped them on a choropleth map using par charts to show sediment trapped and proportional arrows to show strength of long shore drift. the results how high levels of sediment build up to the north however, direction of long shore drift was measured to be going the opposite way due a dominate wind rather than the prevailing wind. there was a larger build up to the north as perveral point shelters some of the beach

Q

questionnaire

A

before doing a questionnaire in Swanage we conducted a piolet study in lyme regis

  • we collected 2 questionnaires making out results more reliable as it is more likely to represent the whole population.
  • it was also stratified in order to get a wide range of people opinion reduce bias
  • from the questionnaire we can see that people feel that the sea defences have had a positive effect on their lives. however they may lack the geographical knowledge to answer accurately
  • an average score of 6.4 means that people feel that the sea defences are effective, however, they were involved in the process so may be bias
