What 3 things does the hyoid bone contribute to swallowing that would not occur if it did not raise?
- Raising the pharynx
- Inverts the epiglottis
- Relaxes UES
Name and describe the locations of the two pharyngeal recesses.
- Valleculae: space between epiglottis and space of tongue

What is the difference between an modified barium swallow study and a regular barium swallow study?
MBSS: assesses the oral and pharyngeal phases of swallowing
BSS: assssssessssssessss esophageal phase
Biggest risk factor for aspiration pneumonia.
Poor oral hygiene
Biggest risk factor when prescribing thickening fluids.
Dehydration. Patients don’t like these fluids as therapy for dysphagia b/c they thicken as the sit and patients won’t drink them.
