Suture/Post-Op QUIZ Flashcards
A taper-point needle should be used:
1. To close delicate soft tissues (such as intestine)
2. To close skin
3. Only with monofilament suture material
4. Only with braided suture material
- To close delicate soft tissues (such as intestine)
Which suture material is most likely to cause an inflammatory reaction?
1. Catgut
2. Stainless steel
3. PDS
4. Nylon
- Catgut
Which suture material is the smallest diameter?
a. 3-0
b. 0
c. 3
d. 3 fr
a. 3-0
What are the advantages to using a multifilament (braided) suture material?
1. Low memory (ease of knot tying)
2. Low knot security
3. Nidus for uroliths
4. Greater tissue resistance (drag)
- Low memory (ease of knot tying)
What is a swaged needle?
1. Has no eye, suture built-in
2. “o” shape in cross section
3. triangle shape in cross section
4. Has two eyes for suture security
- Has no eye, suture built in
What is the knot “tail?”
1. The suture length that has a free edge from the base of the knot
2. The distance from the incision edge to the needle placement
3. The suture that is cut and discarded from a cassette suture to maintain asepsis
4. The most caudal aspect of the incision
- The suture length that has a free edge from the base of the knot
Which suture pattern offers the most strength of the incision line?
1. simple interrupted
2. simple continuous
3. Ford interlocking continuous
4. Lembert continuous
- simple interrupted
When removing sutures, the veterinary technician
1. Should evaluate the incision line for tissue integrity prior to removal
2. Should never allow skin sutures to remain in place for more than 14 days
3. Should cut the knot off first, and then remove the remaining suture material
4. Vet techs can’t legally remove skin sutures without a DVM evaluation
- Should evaluate the incision line for tissue integrity prior to removal
“Mickey” is a 3-year-old M-N DSH, indoor-outdoor cat that presented for four days of lethargy, decreased appetite and hiding prior to the owner noticing a draining wound over the right gluteal region. He is current on his vaccines including FeLV.
He was anesthetized for wound care and penrose drain placement at 10a. He is now being discharged at 5p with Clavamox drops 62mg/ml to be given 1 ml BID for 10 days beginning at 10p tonight. He will need to return in 3-5 days for drain removal and recheck exam.
Please write at least 3 sentences to describe your discharge instruction points to the owner. (note this is a 6pt question)
I would show the client how to give the oral meds, how much, and the times of the day (tonight at 10pm, and every AM & PM) and for how long.
I would go over with the client how to do a warm compress and what to expect for drainage/mess. Keep the E-collar on!
Mickey will need to be an inside cat for at least the next week! Can be revisited at his follow-up appointment which we will schedule during the discharge instruction time.
Provide a list of what to look out for post-op (vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, etc) and inform the client what to look out for changes in the incision site (check daily!!).
The length of a patients recovery period depends on several factors. List 2 factors that impact the length of a patient’s recovery:
- The body’s inflammatory response to the procedure
- pain management
What are 3 factors that can cause hypothermia during anesthesia:
cold iv fluids
shaving and prepping
abdomen being opened during Sx
List 3 anesthesia related complications:
hypothermia
long recovery
delirium
A hematoma is:
1. blood collected under the skin
2. serum collected under the skin
3. soft tissue swelling
4. a soft fatty mass
- blood collected under the skin
What are two preventative measures that can be used to keep a patient from causing self-trauma to their surgical incision?
- use of an e-collar
- have the patient on pain management
What is 1 reason why an incision might dehisce?
infection
