Sustaining Biodiversity Flashcards
What does sustainability mean?
Sustainability means that the needs and requirements of people are met without damaging the Earth for future generations
What is key part to maintaining biodiversity?
Conserving all the species of living things
What doesn’t help maintain biodiversity?
Huge fields of a single crop (monoculture) don’t help because they don’t provide a base for many food chains or different habitats to support a variety of species.
What may be a possible solution to this problem?
Smaller fields, separated by hedgegrows and growing a variety of crops, may be a possible answer.
What commercial viability needs to be considered?
Allowing ‘weed’ plants to grow (organic growing), rather than using herbicides and pesticides, may help maintain biodiversity.
What disadvantage would this have?
This might mean reduced yields and more expensive food.
