Sustainable management in hazardous environments and Philippines Multi Hazard Case Study Flashcards
What is sustainable management?
A pattern of resource use that aims to meet the needs of the present whilst preserving the environment so the needs of the future will also be met
what are the problems of sustainable management in the Philippines?
- It is a poor country so it has to balance what it spends on disaster resistant infrastructure with what it spends on basic services, thus meany schools and hospitals are not built to withstand hazards
- Many sustainable management methods are too expensive to employ
- Population has increased from 19m in 1950 to 100m meaning increased deaths are inevitable
- Deforestation has caused landslides, mudflows and flooding
- Funds are needed for restoration and recovery after each of the 20 typhoons which affect the country each year which continues the cycle of poverty as no money can be spent on protecting against the next disaster
- Few people can afford insurance so the government has to bail them out
what methods have been attempted so far to try and solve the problems to do with sustainable management?
Land use Zoning: making sure that the most valuable buildings are in places which are least likely to be hit by a natural disaster eg. set back from fault lines, steep slopes and coastal areas
Government legislation requires businesses to build buildings which fit the specific requirements eg. strong foundations etc
Modify the loss burden eg. insurance, modify the hazard even eg. building design, location and preparation such as shelters and modify human vulnerability to hazard eg forecasting and warning
give some examples of hazards which the Philippines has suffered from? specific to your course
Super Typhoon Haiyan 2013
Super typhoon Durian 2006
Mudslide/Landslide on Mt Mayon 2006
Mt Pinatubo eruption 1991
why is the Philippines susceptible to volcanoes and earthquakes?
it is located on a destructive plate margin
