What was short term causes of the landslide?
- Heavy rainfall-July to August: 1000mm rainfall, 3x the average
- Steep slopes
What have been the long term causes of the landslide?
-Deforestation- 60% of Forest lost
-Illegal building- land ownership problems between government and people
-Root structure is no longer there so the soil becomes unconsolidated and rainfall washes it away
-Freetown has increased in population by 10x since 1960 meaning more people have moved to the hills, loading the land
Corruption: surveyors allowed building to happen there

Has anything been done about the threat of landslides?
Nah mate, more building taking place actually
What have the people done by taking the problem into there own hands?
- making sure everyone atleast has a permit to build on the hill
- planting more trees in the Tacuguama reserve
