Sustainable Industrial Development Case Study — Torr Quarry Flashcards
Impacts of Industry on Environment
Manufacturing plants look dull + have negative visual effect on landscape;
Industrial processes cause air pollution, water pollution, land degradation;
Transporting raw materials and finished goods is by road —> air pollution
How Industrial Development Can Be More Sustainable
Technology used to reduce harmful emissions from power stations and heavy industry;
Desulfurization can remove harmful gases such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide from power station chimneys;
Stricter environmental targets put in place for industry on water quality, air pollution and landscape damage;
Heavy fines imposed when an industrial pollution incident occurs
Environmental Impacts of Quarrying
Settlements along supply roads suffer from noise, air pollution, congestion on roads, and will relocate;
Nearby villages will relocate, have no land for farming, property prices will drop, and suffer from air pollution;
Landscape will be destroyed or removed, there will be no agriculture, no habitats and trees, and scars will be left;
Freshwater will be polluted by dust and traffic pollution, it will decrease because more will dry up and thus upset the wildlife and habitats;
Landfill is used once the quarrying is completed, this can cause lasting soil and freshwater pollution
Solutions
Forest/trees planted to not make it visible from people’s houses, block noise, create habitats;
Being restored to create wildlife lakes for recreation and water supply;
Characteristic limestone features will be created to make the landscape look natural;
Over 200 acres of trees and grass planted;
Rail transport for quarry material;
Monitoring air pollution and noise;
Improvement on ecosystems
