Sustainable Design Flashcards
what is sustainable design
- provides social and economic benefits while protecting public health, welfare and environmental through life cycle - from extraction to disposal
- philosophy of designing objects, with environmental, social and economic sustainability
Sustainable design concepts
- focuses that the product has little / no long term effects
- Triple bottom line
- cradle to cradle
- longer time in R&D stages; more costly though
- normally radical approach to design instead of incremental. Includes rethinking a product to be more TBL.
- effect positive effects to lives of others & environment by changing the impact of business activity.
cradle to cradle
- sustainable model
- goal: enriching and benefiting the environment
- underlying principle: no waste
- instead of being thrown away, it’s broken down
- uses techniques and manufacturing to ensure little to no waste is left.
6 R’s
- rethink
- reuse
- recycle
- repair
- reduce
- refuse
TBL
concept that means successful business is not only defined by monetary gains but also by the impact an organisation is having on society as a whole
TBL: Environmental
deliver same goods and service with lower environmental impact :
- redesigning systems to be more eco-friendly / eco-efficient
- changing energy resources & materials to comply
- different methods to be more eco-friendly and product less environmental damages.
TBL: Social
improvement in both individual well-being and social welfare
- enhancement of human well-being
- maintaining cultural identity
- empowerment of the community
- gender equality
TBL: Social Variables
- Unemployment rate
- Female labour force participation rate
- Median household income
- education
- health and life expectancy
- poverty
TBL: Economic
policies aimed at enhancing income and inducing more efficient production, service and consumption
- trickle down effect : increases the wealth of the rich and it will trickle down into middle and poor class
TBL: Economic Theory
- maintain econ growth
- development
- improving productivity
-facilitates the economic trickle down effect
Variables: - personal income
- cost of unemployment
- job growth
-employment distribution
decoupling
disconnecting two trends : economic growth with negative environmental impact - so that they are no longer dependant.
- leaves smaller footprint on ecosystem - healthier ecosystem
principle of sustainable design
- cyclic: creating no waste
- solar: using clean energy
- safe: ensuring it’s harmless - toxins, manufacturing
efficient: running with less - social: good faith, meeting criteria, human rights
consideration
- selection of materials and manufacturing process
- impact throughout product life cycle
- end of life scenarios (6 R’s)
- packaging & transportation
- consumption of energy and energy harvesting
- depletion of natural (and finite) resources
- societal and economical impact
gov intervention
- regulation
- education
- taxes
WEE
Waste of electrical & Electronic equipment:
- properly disposed due to toxins leaking in to the land
- properly handled because harmful to humans
