Inclusive Design Flashcards
Inclusive Design
universally accessible for everyone regardless of impairment / disabilities
- designing without adaptations
Qualities of Inclusive design
accessible to use (welcomes everyone) user diversity (responds to everyone's needs) intuitive to use (easy to use)
Drivers for inclusive design; Business
demographic change - ageing population
disability legislation
technological advancement
Drivers for inclusive design; Social
equality
diversity
empowerment
Driver’s for Inclusive design
- expand target group
- exposes opportunities for innovation
- introduces concept of extremes - either side of bell curve
- establishes important parameters for design
- basis for evaluation of ideas
- social inclusion and eliminating social exclusion
Exclusion design; Medical Model
restriction due to lack of physical ability in comparison to which is considered normal human to perform activity
Exclusion design; Social Model
Exclusion because they cannot participate in a social activity because the social does not consider people who suffer from impairment
7 Principles: Equitable use
useful & marketable to diverse audience
7 Principles: Flexible in use
accommodate a diverse audience abilities
7 Principles: intuitive to use
easy to understand regardless of knowledge, language or skill
7 Principles: perceptible information
communication regardless of ability
tolerance for error
can afford to make a mistake, minimise the consequence of accidental actions
low physical effort
use with minimum of fatigue
size shape for use
usable regardless of audience size, posture or mobility
how to ensure inclusive design
- usability testing through entire design process (constant prototyping and testing at all stages)
- iterative process: involvement throughout & discussions
- whole user experience: product need to be emotional, psychological and functional okay
- design teams : loads of opinions
