What is Altruism?
Behaviour that reduces an individual’s fitness while increasing the fitness of others in the population.
What is communication?
Interaction between individuals that enables information to be transferred for Food, potential mates, refuge & safety, Signaling
What are the types of signals?
Visual displays
Auditory or sound
Odour or scent
Why is communication important for reproductive success?
Communication is an important prequiste for mating as it
Confirms individuals of the same species.
That individuals are physically primed for mating
That individuals are not threats
To assess the condition of potential mates.
What are the three mating systems?
Promiscuous -Indiscriminate mating with many partners.
Polygamous - an individual of one sex mating with several others.
Monogamous - A bond between one male and one female
What are the types of social behaviour?
Courtship -
Territorial - fixed location, defends location for exclusive use for food and mating
Agonistic - Threats, rituals, combat
Altruistic - behaviour that reduces an individuals fitness to increase the populations’ fitness
