Marine Ecology Flashcards
What are the different ocean layers or zones?
Epipelagic
Mesopelagic
Pelagic
Abyssopelagic
Abyssal zone
What is the Photic zone
Upper layer where there is still sunlight, Phytoplankton uses photosynthesis.
What is the Aphotic zone?
Beneath the Photic zone, little to no sunlight.
What is Upwelling?
Upwelling is an oceanographic phenomenon where deep, cold water rises toward the surface, replacing warmer surface water. It is driven by winds and the rotation of the Earth, and the upward movement of nutrient-rich deep water provides essential nutrients for marine ecosystems.
What is the littoral zone?
The Littoral zone is also known as the intertidal zone. This describes the area where the sea and land meet (coastlines). It is very rich in nutrients and is home to a variety of organisms.
