Behaviour Flashcards
What is animal behaviour?
Behaviours are responses to environmental cues.
What are the causes of behaviour?
There are two categories.
Proximate causes- How a behavior occurs: Internal causes:physiological e.g hormones, nervous system, and external causes: Environmental stimuli e.g day length, temperature.
Ultimate causes - Why a behavior evolved: Evolutionary selection e.g natural or sexual. Adaptive significance;: effect on fitness.
What are the factors that influence behaviour?
Behaviour can be influenced by the environment and genetics.
What are innate behaviours?
Innate behaviours are behaviours that are not learned>
What are the list of learned behaviours?
Habituation
Imprinting
Spatial learning
Associative learning
Social learning
Problem solving
What is habituation?
An animal learns not to respond to a repeated stimulus.
What is imprinting?
Where an animal learns within a specific time period and then the behaviour is irreversible.
What is spatial learning?
An animal moves around to orientate themselves to find food, shelter and avoid predators.
What is associative learning
Where an animal links one environmental feature to another. Where the animal acquires a memory. e.g a dog learning a sound or word.
What is social learning?
Where an animal learns by observing another.
What is problem solving?
The process of applying experience to overcome obstacles in novel situations, requires a cognitive ability to perceive, store integrate and use information.
