survival needs Flashcards
what are survival needs?
factors that must be present to maintain life
nutrients
usually via the diet are necessary for energy and cell structure & function
- carbohydrates
energy source
- proteins
vital for cell structure and function
- lipids (fats)
cell structure, protection (cushioning), insulation, and energy
- vitamins and minerals
necessary for chemical reactions often serving as coenzymes
oxygen
necessary component of the chemical reactions in the body that release energy
water
makes up 60-80% of the body’s weight and is necessary for maintaining the watery environment necessary for most chemical reactions in the body
normal body temperature (37c/98.6f)
must be maintained for chemical reactions to progress normally
what happens if body temperature is too low?
reactions slow down and may even stop
what happens if body temperature is too high?
reactions happen too frantically and the end-products are distorted and useless
atmospheric pressure
force exerted by air on the body; vital for breathing and gas exchange in the lungs
what happens if atmospheric pressure is too low?
gas exchange is hampered and may be inadequate
