1.4c introduction to organ systems Flashcards
what are the 11 body systems?
integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, urinary, digestive
male and female reproductive
integumentary system
- provides protection
- regulates body temp
- site of cutaneous receptors and some glands
- synthesizes vitamin d
- prevents water loss
what are some associated organs of the integumentary system?
hair, skin, nails
skeletal system
*provides support and protection
*site of hemopoiesis
(blood cell production)
- stores calcium&phosphorus
- provides sites for ligament and muscle attachments
what are some associated organs of the skeletal system?
skull, upper/lower limb bones, sternum, rib, cartilage, vertebrae, sacrum, knee joint
muscular system
- produces body movement
* generates heat when muscles contract
what are some associated organs of the muscular system?
pectoralis major muscle, sartorius muscle, aponeurosis, tendons
nervous system
- a regulatory system that controls muscles and some glands
- responds to sensory stimuli
- helps control all other systems of the body
- responsible for consciousness, intelligence, memory
what are some associated organs of the nervous system?
sense organ (eye)
(CNS)- brain, spinal cord
(PNS)- nerves
endocrine system
*consists of glands and cell clusters that secrete hormones
(some of which regulate development; grow&develop)
- maintain homeostasis of blood composition and volume
- control digestive processes
- control reproductive functions
what are some associated organs of the endocrine system?
hypothalamus, pineal gland, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, thymus, adrenal glands, parathyroid glands (posterior surface of thyroid gland), pancreas, kidney, ovaries (female)
cardiovascular system
- consists of heart (a pump) and blood vessels
* heart moves blood through blood vessels in order to distribute hormones, nutrients, gases, and pick up waste products
what are some associated organs of the cardiovascular system?
heart, blood vessels
lymphatic system
- transports and filters lymph (interstitial fluid that is collected in and transported through lymph vessels)
- may participate in an immune response
what are some associated organs of the lymphatic system?
tonsils, cervical lymph nodes, thymus, thoracic duct, axillary lymph nodes, spleen, inguinal lymph nodes, popliteal lymph node, lymph vessel
