-I often use maps of:
-Local Development Maps
-SEPA Flood Map
-Historic Environmental Scotland
-Coal Mining Authority
What information can be collected from Maps?
-Size of a site (Promaps)
-LDP allocations
-Flood risk areas
-Listed buildings
- Conservative areas
What is a Map and what should it have?
-Symbolic representation of selected characteristics of a place
-A North point, Scale Bar and Title
Tell me about your understanding and the importance of accuracy for mapping?
-For LDP’s to allow the correct policies to used for an application
-To make sure all relevant constraints have been recorded within a report
-Sizing of a site should be accurate for marketing purposes
What is GIS?
-Geographic Information System
-Stores geographical information and is database containing this geographical data
-Eg) Interactive LDP Maps
What is BIM?
-Building Information Modelling
-Process of creating an managing information for built assets
What is GPS?
-Global Positioning System
-Used to determine the location of something on earth
Give 3 examples of main forms of mapping?
- Physical (landmarks, water, mountains)
- Geologic (shows earths materials)
- Topographic (terrain and elevations)
What is the Ordinance Survey?
-National mapping agency of GB
Where are OS maps generally used in your role?
-Location Plans as part of an application or as part of a marketing brochure
Give some advantages and disadvantages of digital mapping?
-Up to Date
-Easily accessible
-Can utilise keywords
-Less paper waste/storage
Disadvantages:
- Harder to scale
What is a red line plan?
-This shows where the site in question is located
-The red line being the site boundary
What other colours might you find on a map?
-Blue
-This shows land ownership
What is a title plan?
-Illustrates the extent of the property/land owned
What is a title plan used for?
-Identifying the property/land in a registered title
-Allows to also identify rights of way
What are the main map scales used in your area?
- 1:1250 for a location and site plan for submitting with a planning application
What is a Raster Map?
-Digital aerial map
-Satellite maps,
-Scanned maps
-Digital images
-It is a dot matrix data structure
What is a Vector Map?
-Based on collection of GIS data
-Drawn as the page on the computer is loaded
-Can be low resolution
What is a topography layer?
-A style of map that shows the physical elevation of land
-Shown by shading or contour lines or both
Do OS Maps show legal boundaries?
-No they don’t show legal property boundaries or ownership of physical features
