surgical syndromes Flashcards
obstruction of the afferent lop of a billroth II gastrojejunostomy
afferent loop syndrome
what does ARDS stand for
acute resp distress syndrome
poor oxygenation caused by alveolar and capillary inflammation
bacterial overgrowth of intestine caused by stasis
blind loop syndrome
Slowly moving food and waste products become a breeding ground for bacteria. The result — bacterial overgrowth — often causes diarrhea and may cause weight loss and malnutrition. it is often called stasis syndrome
Blind loop syndrome is a complication of surgical operations of the abdomen, as well as inflammatory bowel disease or scleroderma. Another cause is jejunoileal diverticula.
esophageal perforation/ spontaneous rupture of the esophagus that typically occurs after forceful emesis
boerhaave’s syndrome or mallory weiss syndrome
how do we tell the difference between boerhaave’s syndrome and mallory Weiss syndrome?
boerhaave syndrome= full thickness AKA transmural tear in the thoracic esophagus, can have chest pain and shock, can hear Hamman crunch sign
mallory weiss syndrome= also a tear, but not all the way through (not transmural). tear on the gastric side of the gastroesophageal jxn) can cause hematemesis
