Surgical Draping Flashcards
Drapes are selected based on…
type of procedure
amount of area around the incision to be included
amount of fluid exposure expected
Furniture and equipment to be draped
4 factors when choosing which drapes:
Fluid, EBL, Duration, Dr preference
Aperature drapes..
Typically used in eye or ear procedures, adhesive surrounds a fenestration in the plastic sheeting.
Prevent lateral microbial migration to the incision.
Permit visualization of skin tones and landmarks
Eliminate the need for towel clips
Conforms to body contours.
Select the proper order for removal of drapes:
The proper order for removal of drapes is:
Last suture placed – > incision site dressed –> removal of instruments –> removal of drapes –> disposable material disposed of.
What drape quality is most essential to maintaining the sterile field?
Barrier protection
Draping is the the procedure of covering the pt and surrounding areas with a sterile barrier to create and maintain a barrier that will prevent passage of microorganisms between nonsterile and sterile areas.
Name 3 draping considerations:
Drape from STERILE to UNsterile, by draping the nearest first.
Ensure drapes are applied after prep solutions are dry.
When draping the opposite side, the scrubbed person should walk around the OR bed to drape.
What precautions should the scrub person take during draping?
Be careful not to contaminate your gown.
Never reach across an unsterile area.
laparotomy sheets
Longitudinal fenestration
Covers site on abdomen, back, or similar area
perineal sheet
Used to create sterile field with a pt in the lithotomy position. May have incorporated leggings.
extremity sheet
many uses!
cover arm boards
cover furniture or equipment
wrap an extremity.
medium sheet
may be used as added protection above or below the surgical area, or for draping areas in which a fenestrated sheet can’t be used.
Incise drape
Plastic
Impermeable
With or without iodine
With or without adhesive backing
Not recommended but may be used for draping irregular body areas, to seal off contaminated areas such as a stoma, or to cover equipment like a tourniquet or microscope.
towel drape
plastic sheeting with a band of adhesive along one edge.
may be used to wall off a contaminated area such as a stoma from clean skin to prevent spillage and contamination.
