Surfaces, borders and impressions of the lungs Flashcards
Where does the apex of the lung extend to?
The base of the neck, above the first rib
What are the three surfaces of the lungs?
Costal surface, mediastinal surface, diaphragmatic surface/base.
What is the costal surface close to?
The ribs and costal cartilage.
Describe the mediastinal surface.
Anteriorly it is close to the mediastinum and posteriorly it is close to the vertebral column.
What is the base of the lung in contact with?
The diaphragm.
What are the three borders of the lungs?
Inferior, anterior and posterior
What does the inferior border separate?
the base from the costal surface
What does the anterior border separate?
The costal surface from the mediastinal surface.
What is different about the left and right anterior borders?
Right is straight, left has deep cardiac notch in it.
What does the posterior border separate?
The costal surface from the mediastinal surface.
What is different about the posterior border?
It is smooth and rounded
What structures create impressions in the right lung?
the inferior and superior vena cava, the oesophagus, the azygos vein, the diaphragm and the heart
What structures create impressions in the left lung?
The aortic arch and descending aorta, the heart, the diaphragm
