Surface marking of abdominal organs Flashcards
Where does the cardiac orifice lie?
At the 7th CC 2.5cm from the midline on the left side
Where does the pyloric orifice lie?
On the transpyloric plane, 2.5cm to the right side.
Describe the greater curvature on the surface.
Fundus rises from cardiac orifice to 5th CC, then drops to 10th CC. 5 —> 10.
Describe the lesser curvature.
From right side of cardiac notch to pyloric orifice.
Describe the path of the duodenum:
Upwards and backwards, down, left, left up
Where is the first bend of the duodenum
At L1, 2.5cm from midline
Where is the lower bend of the duodenum
At subcostal plane (L3) 5cm from midline.
Where does the duodenum become the jejunum
2.5cm left of midline at L2.
Describe the position of the Caecum
Lies above the lateral half of the inguinal ligament
Describe how to locate the appendix
McBurney’s point, 1/3 of the way from ASIS to the umbilicus
Which location does the ascending colon start and finish at?
Starts at caecum, ascends through right lumbar region to level of transpyloric plane, forming hepatic flexure.
The descending colon becomes the sigmoid at which region?
Left inguinal region
Where is the urinary bladder located?
Behind the two pubic bones, the upper border of the bladder reaches the crest of the pubic bones
List the 4 points to surface mark the liver:
1: Right 5th rib at MCL
2: Lower end of sternum
3: Left 5th ICS at MCL
4: Lower border of costal margin at MAL
How would you surface mark the gall bladder
Where the transpyloric plane and the right MCL meet.
