surface finishers Flashcards
why do we supply surface finishers
protect from scratches and weathering
looks nice
easier to clean
what are finishers for metals
electroplating
polymer dip coating
galvansing
power coating
anodising
how does electroplanting work
coat one metal with a different type of metal
benefits of electroplanting
improves aesthetic
what base metal is commonly used in electroplanting
steel
- can be copper, silver and other metals
what coat metal can be used in electroplanting
chromium
gold
silver
what is steel commonly plated with in electroplating
tin
nickel
chronium
to improve corrosion / wear resistance
what can polymer coating be
liquid or powdered form
what form of plastic is used in polymer coating
liquid from of PVC known as plastisol
process of polymer coating
metal parts are pre-heated before being dipped
when powder is used it is in a fluidised tank. air is blown into the bottom of the tank which makes the powered plastic appear to bubble
process of galvanising
steel dipped into molted zinc - creates a metallurgical bond - crystalline surface
1 - clean
2 - rinse
3 - piczling
4 - rinse
5 - flux solution
6 - molten zonc bath
7 - cooling and cleaning
what is galvanising used for
used for things that are outside all the time
- farm gates
- crash barriers
what does powder coating involve
involves the use of an electrostatic charge. the powder is positively charged. the object to be coated is negatively charged
the charge is sprayed onto the surface, the electrostatic charge means that it sticks evenly
it is then put into an oven where the ecoting melts and forms a smooth ad hard wearing surface
what does anodising use
electrolysis
what is anodising used on
aluminium and titanium - not steel
