A

. Heard in 2013
. It struck down part of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act.
. Under its provisions, the federal government was barred from providing benefits ( such as tax concessions ) to those same - sex couples who had been able to marry in the limited number of states of course tries that came to permit it.
