Suprahyoid Strap Muscles Flashcards
What is the action of the suprahyoid muscles?
Elevate hyoid bone (action involved in swallowing)
What are the attachments of the digastric muscle?
. Anterior and posterior belly joined by tendon, which joins to hyoid bone via fibrous sling
. Anterior belly originates from digastric fossa of mandible
. Posterior belly originates from mastoid process of temporal bone
What is the innervation of the digastric muscle?
. Anterior belly innervated by inferior alveolar branch of mandibular nerve, which is derived from the trigeminal nerve
. Posterior belly innervated by digastric branch of facial nerve
What are the attachments of the stylohyoid muscle?
Originates from styloid process of temporal bone, inserts into lateral aspect of hyoid bone
What is the innervation of the stylohyoid muscle?
Stylohyoid branch of facial nerve
What are the attachments of the mylohyoid muscle?
Originates from mandible, inserts into hyoid
What is the innervation of the mylohyoid muscle?
Inferior alveolar nerve (branch of mandibular nerve, derived from trigeminal nerve)
What are the attachments of the geniohyoid muscle?
Originates from mandible, attaches to hyoid bone
What is the innervation of the geniohyoid bone?
C1 nerve root, which runs with the hypoglossal nerve
What is the blood supply of the suprahyoid muscles?
Branches of the facial, occipital, and lingual arteries
