Neck and Back Muscles Flashcards
What is the action of the sternocleidomastoid?
Flexion and rotation of neck
What are the attachments of the sternocleidomastoid?
Originates from manubrium and clavicle, inserts into mastoid process of temporal bone
What is the innervation of the sternocleidomastoid?
Spinal accessory nerve, CNXI
What is the root value of the spinal accessory nerve? How about the vagus nerve?
. Spinal accessory nerve is CNXI
. Vagus nerve is CNX
Where is the levator scapulae found?
Deep to the SCM and trapezius
What is the action of the levator scapulae?
Elevation and rotation of scapula (allows arm abduction because humerus attached to scapula)
What are the attachments of the levator scapulae?
Originates from posterior tubercle of transverse process of C1-C4 inserts into upper medial border of scapula
What is the innervation of the levator scapula?
Dorsal scapular nerve and cervical spinal nerve
What is the action of the trapezius?
Elevation, depression, rotation, retraction of scapula
What are the attachments of the trapezius?
. Originates from external occipital protuberance, nuchal ligament, and spinous processes of C7-T12
. Inserts into lateral third of clavicle, acromion, and scapular spine
What is the innervation of the trapezius?
Spinal accessory nerve, CNXI
What is the action of the latissimus dorsi?
Extension, adduction, medial rotation at shoulder joint
What are the attachments of the latissimus dorsi?
. Originates from spinous processes of T6-T12, inferior 3-4 ribs, and iliac crest
. Inserts into intertubercular sulcus of humerus
What is the innervation of the latissimus dorsi?
Thoracodorsal nerve, C6-C8
Where are the relative positions of the rhomboid major and rhomboid minor?
Rhomboid minor is superior to rhomboid major
