What is a prolactinoma?
A benign pituitary tumor that produces prolactin.
Which dopamine agonist is licensed for suppression of lactation and treatment of galactorrhoea and prolactinomas?
Bromocriptine.
How does bromocriptine work?
Stimulates dopamine receptors and inhibits prolactin release.
Which drug may be used if a patient is intolerant to bromocriptine?
Cabergoline (and vice versa).
Why are bromocriptine and cabergoline not recommended for routine suppression of lactation?
Because postpartum pain and engorgement can be treated with analgesics and breast support.
What condition is quinagolide licensed to treat?
Hyperprolactinaemia.
What is hyperprolactinaemia?
A condition characterised by abnormally high levels of prolactin in the blood.
