Hypothalamic and anterior pituitary hormone related disorders Flashcards
What are the six key hormones released by the anterior pituitary?
Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
luteinising hormone (LH)
growth hormone (GH)
prolactin (PRL)
What does ACTH (corticotropin) stimulate?
The adrenal cortex to produce corticosteroids, mainly glucocorticoids and some androgens.
What is tetracosactide used for?
To test adrenocortical function (diagnosing adrenal insufficiency).
What are gonadotrophins?
Hormones secreted by the pituitary that stimulate the gonads (e.g., FSH, LH, hCG).
What are FSH and LH used for in women?
Treating infertility.
What is somatropin?
Recombinant human growth hormone used in adults and children.
What does gonadorelin do when injected IV?
Causes a rapid rise in LH and FSH levels.
What are gonadorelin analogues used to treat?
Endometriosis, infertility, breast cancer, and prostate cancer.
