What are gonadotrophins and where are they produced?
Gonadotrophins (LH & FSH) are hormones produced by the pituitary gland that regulate the function of the gonads (ovaries/testes).
What is the role of luteinising hormone (LH) in females?
LH triggers ovulation.
Why are gonadotrophin-inhibiting drugs used in fertility treatments?
To prevent premature ovulation, allow multiple follicles to mature, and control the exact timing of ovulation.
What is Danazol used for?
Treatment of endometriosis and severe pain in benign fibrocystic breast disease unresponsive to other treatments.
What are gonadorelin analogues used to treat?
Endometriosis, precocious puberty, infertility, hormone-sensitive cancers, uterine fibroids, and before intra-uterine surgery.
What are first-line treatments for mild non-cyclical breast pain?
Paracetamol and/or ibuprofen (oral or topical).
What unlicensed drug may help with cyclical mastalgia related to oestrogen?
Tamoxifen (used during symptomatic parts of the cycle).
