Destination Management Company (DMC)
Represents a location and specializes in the design and implementation of events, activities, tours, transportation, and program logistics. Organizes things like guest tours, transportation, activities, and entertainment for events hosted in that area.
Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (CVB)
Nonprofit organizations that promote a specific location and drive business to that area. They are funded through membership fees and taxes. They serve as an unbiased resource for event planners and visitors, and they assist planners with event preparation in addition to finding a venue to host.
Ex. Explore Michigan, Visit Pheonix
National Sales Officer (NSO)
Additional sales/marketing arm for a specific hotel chain or brand. Receives leads and forward to appropriate properties they represent. Usually receive a commission for business they bring to a venue.
Affiliate/Agent
Additional sales/marketing extension for venues that are not part of a big name chain. They market their name like a brand would so that it becomes a well recognized group in the industry. They are helpful for independent venues that do not work with a chain or do not have an easily recognizable brand. Members pay a fee to join and have new business brought to their hotel.
Convention Center vs. Conference Center
Convention Center - has a large exhibit area and no sleeping rooms
Ex. Volleyball Tournament, Super Bowl, ComicCon
Conference Center - has many meeting rooms and has sleeping rooms
Ex. Church Retreat, Safeway Managers Conference
Resort
Everything is included on-site
Ex. All inclusive resort at Aruba
Boutique Hotel
Smaller individual hotel with a unique personality.
Ex. Main Street Inn
