Supplementary Readings Flashcards
Baceviciene et al. (2019) Key Terms
Risk profile for mental disorders (PHC in article) = if you’re on the path towards a mental disorder, then you’re going to have negative self-esteem.
Psychological complaints = sleep problems, low mood, sadness, irritability.
Somatic complaints = back, shoulder, neck pain.
Self-reported PA = physical activity.
Self-reported physical fitness = physical strength, physical condition, sport competence.
Forms of Coping and PA in Baceviciene et al. (2019)
Unhealthy behaviours (negative coping behaviours = high screen time, drinking alcohol, smoking, and consumption.
-all linked to lower levels of PA and self-perceptions
Females with increased risky behaviours (poor nutrition, more internet use, lower perceptions of physical fitness and PA) reported more psychosomatic health complaints.
One unit of life satisfaction showed a 10% decreased in somatic complaints and 15% decrease in psychological complaints.
Decreased physical fitness and PA and decreased sport participation resulted in increase in psychosomatic complaints.
Sport participation does not impact/improve psychosomatic and risky behaviour (except screen time).
Hackenberger et al. (2023) Findings
Subjectively assessed PA and objectively assessed light PA were associated with feeling less stressed in the evening.
Also, light PA during the day was associated with a smaller increase/higher decrease in feeling stressed from morning to evening.
The association of stress experience with negative affect was moderated by objective light PA.
No interactive effects of stress intensity and PA on affective well-being were found.
On stressful days, PA may buffer the negative association between stress and affective wellbeing.
Particularly light PA as assessed by accelerometry seems to play an important role.
It may be beneficial for students affective wellbeing to increase or at least maintain PA during examination periods.
Kayani et al. (2020) Findings
Results revealed that PA does not directly affect academic anxiety, and indirectly through self-enhancement and self-criticism.
Based on the study findings, it is recommended that PA be promoted among students to promote self-enhancement, minimize negative thinking and self-criticism, and reduce their academic anxiety.
Tao et al. (2020) Findings
The rates of depression were higher among students with problematic mobile phone use or low PA.
Hierarchical analysis indicated that moderate or high PA was related to greater decrease in the risk of depression for students with problematic mobile phone use.
Findings indicate that PA moderates the association between problematic phone use and depression.
