Method of MI Flashcards
Four Processes of MI
Engaging
Focusing
Evoking
Planning
Engaging
The process of establishing a helpful connection and a working relationship.
It starts with bringing the MI spirit and the curious mindset of a guide.
-advice without connection can be harmful.
Focusing
The process by which you develop and maintain a focus on what the change the person came to talk about.
The person is talking with you.
-they are motivated, there is just something blocking it.
May happen near end of first interview, or start in second interview.
Evoking
Eliciting the client’s own motivations and resources for change.
-personal change requires the person’s active participation.
People talk themselves into changing
-your job is not to confront reasons why the person isn’t changing, but to help them find their own way to overcome the barriers.
Planning
Involved developing a commitment to change and a specific plan of action.
Look for their solutions, promote their autonomy, and continue to reinforce strengths.
Know you have gotten to this stage, when we go from “whether and why to change” to “when and how to change”
