supervolcano Flashcards
what is
A supervolcano is any volcano capable of producing a volcanic eruption with an ejecta volume greater than 1,000 km3.
how to detect?
They are typically depressions in the ground. The calderas are so large they can be seen from space.
how is magma collected
The magma gets stuck and pools, melting the rock around for thousands of years. Over thousands of years the pressure builds up and when the eruption eventually happens it drains the magma lake and the land above collapse down over, creating a caldera.
what would happen if the volcano erpted
If a supervolcano was to erupt there would be a global catastrophe.
It would kill around 100,000 people instantly and make most of North America uninhabitable as huge amounts of ash and dust would be thrown into the atmosphere.
