About 500 species of wildlife lost their habitats or were in danger due to the fire. Many wastes such as ash and rotting food were produced in the burning process. The fire also released a large amount of CO2 and other toxic contaminants including heavy metals deposited on trees and soils.

As the fire threatened Fort McMurray, a mass evacuation programme was implemented, and some 90000 residents of the city were escorted to safety.
Aircraft were used to evacuate some of the oil sands workers as the fire threatened these areas to the north of Fort McMurray.

-The Alberta government declared a state of emergency and this triggered support from the Canadian armed forces. Helicopters, water bombers and firefighters were brought into the area from neighbouring states and offers of help were received from many countries, including the USA, Australia and Russia.
The Alberta government supported evacuees by providing CAN$1250 per adult and CAN$500 per dependant to help cover living expenses. By 9 May the Canadian Red Cross had received donation more than CAN$50 million.
