Administrative
oversight of program policies, procedures and standards. Quality assurance (hiring, training, oversight of paperwork, enforcement of rules, monitoring of productivity and evaluations
- Hierarchal, supervisor is an expert who guides supervisee, supervisee has to meet supervisor’s criteria, supervisor sets expectations and agenda of supervision, power resides with supervisor, supervisor sets up procedures and actions; approaches to treatment and beliefs and values.
Reflective
Supervision: questioning, supervisor is a sounding board who uses inquiry to create growth, supervisee makes meaning of counseling experience, schemas are developed. Expectations and agenda are derived from experiences of supervisee and experiences encountered in supervision, power is dependent upon mental maps developed, mutually come to understanding, develop trust based on experiences, shared exploration of parallel process, attention to relationships, attention to emotional content of work and reactions, supervisor listens and waits, allows supervisee to come to solutions, concepts and perceptions on own, intentional partnering relationship, using process as the approach to problem-solving, embracing complexity, promoting a professional use of self, consistency is key, remains open, curious and emotionally available, protects against interruptions, respect, gently inquiry, suspends judgment, requires honesty and trust, characterized by active listening, shared power!
Problem-solving supervision (Clinical Supervision)
facilitative, supervisor as a coach, agenda set by problems, power is relative to successful resolution of problems, supervisor has more experience, case-focused, does not consider what practitioner brings to intervention, does not encourage exploration of emotions, review, discuss and evaluate impressions, treatment planning, intervention strategies and clinical progress, give guidance/advice and teach.
Collabartion
teamwork, shared power and responsibility, transdisciplinary (releasing power to other professionals), process through which a group of people explore their ideas to search for solutions that extend beyond one’s own limited vision
- Communication key!
- Trust is the glue
- Relationships are key
- Working together through sharing and thinking through (accomplishing a common goal)
- Strong sense of purpose
- Equal participation
- Utilize many perspectives, strengths and skills of everyone involved
- Could be conflicts in working styles of certain individuals/personality differences
Focus on relationship
Be pleasant, a little extra kindness needed
Offer compliments (maybe they feel like they are not being heard or appreciated)
Look within (is the tensions caused by your own attitude/actions)
Don’t take it personally (could be due to hardships in their life)
Engage in Conversation
Keep cool, stay calm and rational
Acknowledge their feelings, listen to them
Communicate clearly
Be assertive but not aggressive
• Use “I” statements rather than “you never did this…”
• “Have you considered this” rather than “your way of thinking doesn’t take this into account”
