Superposition Flashcards
When does superposition happen?
When two or more waves pass through each other.
What happens in superposition?
At the instant the waves cross, the displacements due to each wave combine, then each wave separates.
What is the principle of superposition?
When two or more waves cross, the resultant displacement equals the vector sum of the individual displacement.
What are the various displacements?
- When a crest meets a crest, a super crest is created, two waves reinforce each other.
- Where a trough meets a trough a super trough is created.
What happens when a crest meets a trough of the same amplitude?
• Where a crest meets a trough of the sample amplitude, the resultant displacement is zero, the two waves cancel each other.
• If they are not the same amplitude the result is called a minimum.
This is an example of a destructive interference.
