What are the ten superficial reflexes?
- Gag reflex
- Corneal blink
- Epigastric
- Upper abdominal
- Middle abdominal
- Lower abdominal
- cremasteric
- Gluteal
- Plantar
- Anal

What is the Peripheral nerve of the Gag reflex?
CN IX & X
What is the Peripheral nerve of the Corneal blink reflex?
CN V & VII
What is the Peripheral nerve of the Epigastric reflex?
Intercostal
What is the Peripheral nerve of the Upper abdominal reflex?
intercostal
What is the Peripheral nerve of the middle abdominal reflex?
Intercostal
What is the Peripheral nerve of the lower abdominal reflex?
- Intercostal
- Iliohypogastric
- Ilioinguinal
What is the Peripheral nerve of the cremasteric reflex?
- ilioinguinal
- Genitofemoral
What is the Peripheral nerve of the gluteal reflex?
Inferior gluteal
What is the Peripheral nerve of the plantar reflex?
Tibial
What is the Peripheral nerve of the anal reflex?
Inferior hemorrhoidal
When performing the corneal blink reflex what is the expected outcome?
blinking of both eyes when the cornea of one eye is touched with a cotton wisp
what superficial reflex is associated with stimulation from the sternum towards the umbilicus?
epigastric reflex
What superficial reflex is associated with stimulation from the upper abs (down and out, out and in direction)?
upper abdominal reflex
What superficial reflex is associated with stimulating the skin at the level of the umbilicus from out to in, and vertical?
Middle abdominal reflex
What superficail reflex involves stimulating the skin of the lower abs from an out to in direction?
lower abdominal reflex
What superficial reflex should result in the umbilicus moving up and out?
upper abdominal reflex
What superficial reflex should result in moving the umbilicus laterally?
middle abdominal reflex
what superficial reflex should result in moving the umbilicus down and out?
lower abdominal reflex
When might the cremasteric reflex be abscent?
- elderly
- hydrocele
- varicocele
How do you perform the test of the plantar superficial reflex?
stroke the plantar surface of the foot from heel to metatarsals to the big toe (in a 7 shape)
What is the normal elicited response to the plantar reflex?
plantar flexion of toes and foot
what is the abnormal response to the plantar reflex?
dorsiflexion of great toe and flaring of the other toes
What is the normal elicited response to the anal reflex?
contracture of the external sphincter
what could a loss of external sphincter contracture mean?
cauda equina syndrome
If cauda equina syndrome or lesion of is suspected what should you do to determine the diagnosis;
MRI of thoracics b/c no cord in the lumbars; if there is no lesion in the thoracics do cervical MRI
If a decrease in external sphincter contraction is unilateral vs symmetrical what should you think in terms of diagnosis?
unilateral = cord lesion
symmetrical = brain lesion
The babinski response is revealed with which superficial reflex test?
plantar
