Superficial Gluteal muscles Flashcards
What are the attachments of the gluteus maximus?
Originates from gluteal/posterior surface of ilium, sacrum and coccyx, inserts into iliotibial tract and gluteal tuberosity of femur
What is the function of the gluteus maximus?
Extension and lateral rotation of thigh
What is the innervation of the gluteus maximus?
Inferior gluteal nerve
What are the attachments of the gluteus medius?
Originates from gluteal surface of ilium, inserts into lateral surface of great trochanter
What is the action of the gluteus medius?
. Abduction and medial rotation of lower limb
. Secures pelvis during movement to prevent pelvic drop of opposite limb
What is the innervation of the gluteus medius?
Superior gluteal nerve
What are the attachments of the gluteus minimus?
Originates from ilium, inserts into anterior side of greater trochanter
What are the actions of the gluteus minimus?
. Abduction and medial rotation of lower limb
. Secures pelvis during movement to prevent pelvic drop of opposite limb
(Same function as gluteus medius)
What is the innervation of the gluteus minimus?
Superior gluteal nerve
What is the function of the tensor fascia lata?
Assists gluteus medius and minimus in abduction and
What are the attachments of the tensor fascia lata?
Originates from anterior iliac crest and ASIS, attaches to iliotibial tract (iliotibial tract attaches to lateral condyle of tibia)
What is the innervation of the tensor fascia lata?
Superior gluteal nerve
What is the Trendelenburg sign? What causes this?
. Pelvic drop of unsupported leg when standing on one leg
. E.g. Left gluteal muscles weak= right side of pelvis drops when patient stood on left leg
. Can be caused by damage to the superior gluteal nerve, which innervates the gluteus medius and gluteus minimum
