Deep Gluteal Muscles Flashcards

1
Q

What are the attachments of the piriformis muscle?

A

Originates from anterior surface of sacrum, travels through greater sciatic foramen and inserts into greater trochanter of femur

Actions: Lateral rotation and abduction.
Innervation: Nerve to piriformis.

Q

Why is the piriformis an important anatomical landmark?

A

. As piriformis travels through greater sciatic foramen, it divides the gluteal region into an inferior and superior part
. Superior gluteal nerve and vessels come into gluteal region superior to piriformis
. Inferior gluteal nerve and vessels come into gluteal region inferior to piriformis
. Sciatic nerve enters gluteal region directly inferior to piriformis, visible as a flat band (approx. 2cm wide)
