Superficial glute muscles Flashcards
what are the 4 muscles in the superior glutes
Tensor of Fascia Lata (TFL)
Gluteus maximus
Gluteus medius
Gluteus minimius

Enclosed between two layers of fascia lata, aids stability of knee via iliotibial tract.
ASIS, anterior part of the iliac crest
iliotibial tract, which attaches to lateral condyle of tibia
superior gluteal nerve
Abducts and medially rotates thigh, weak flexor of the thigh.
Gluteus Maximus

illium, post to the post gluteal line, post surface of the sacrum and coccyx.
most fibres attach to the iliotibial tract, ( lateral condyle of the tibia) some fibres attach to the gluteal tuberosity of femur.
Inferior gluteal nerve
extends the thigh ( especially when in flexed position, standing from seating.)
Gluteus Medius
PA
DA
N
A
important in stabilsing the pelvis when walking
External surface of ilium, b/w ant and post gluteal lines.
Lat surface of the greater trochanter of the femur.
Superior gluteal nerve
Abducts and medially rotates the thigh, keeps pelvis level when ipsilateral limb is bearing weight.
Gluteus Minimus
PA
DA
N
A
Important in stabilizing the pelvis when walking
Extrenal surface of the ilium, b/n the ant and post gluteal lines.
ant surface of the greater trochanter
superior gluteal nerve
Abducts and medially rotates the thigh, keeps the pelvis level when ipsilateral limb is bearing weight.
