Superficial Deep Back Flashcards
sternoclavicular articulation
one bony attachment of the upper limb to the torso, acts as a strut for the glenohumeral articulation.
subtrapezial plexus
network of nerves (CN XI and spinal nerves C3 and C4) on the ventral surface of the trapezius
triangle of auscultation
area approximately located superficial to the posterior sixth intercostal space, which because it is devoid of overlying muscle, eases auscultation (listening with stethoscope)
transverse cervical artery
branch of thyrocervical trunk, passes posteriorly w/in posterior triangle of the neck and slips deep to the trapezius muscle. divides into superficial and deep branches
What branch runs deep to the levator scapulae and rhomboideus muscles?
Dorsal scapular artery - either arises from the transverse cervical artery (deep branch) or from the subclavian artery
What branch of subscapular artery is along the ventral surface of the latissimus dorsi?
thoracodorsal artery
What are the borders of the triangle of auscultation?
trapezius (medial), rhombus major (lateral), latissimus dorsi (inferior)
What are the three subdivisions of the back muscles?
superficial - attach scapula to torso (ventral primary rami of cervical spinal nerves)
intermediate - posterior muscles of respiration (ventral primary rami of thoracic spinal nerves)
deep - extend, sidebend and rotate spine (dorsal rami of spinal nerves)
What are the two regions of the deep fascia extending from the skull to the sacrum?
nuchal fascia (cervical) thoracolumbar fascia (thorax and lumbar)
What other fascia structures attachment structures are present?
superficial (posterior) lamina - attached medially to the nuchal ligament, supraspinal ligament, tips of all the spinous processes, medan crest of the sacrum
deep (anterior) lamina - attached medially to the base of the skull below the superior nuchal line, to the tips of cervical and lumbar transverse processes and in the thoracic region to the angles of the ribs.
What nerve innervates all the suboccipital muscles?
dorsal ramus of cervical spinal nerve C1 (suboccipital nerve)
what are the borders of the suboccipital triangle?
obliquus capitis superior
obliquus captitis inferior
rectus capitis posterior major
What are the contents of the suboccipital triangle?
vertebral artery, suboccipital nerve
- greater occipital nerve passes through (C2)
What vessels supply the back muscles?
The dorsal branches of vessels that parallel the vertebral column
- vertebral a., ascending cervical a., posterior intercostal aa, lumbar aa, iliolumbar a, lateral sacral a.
What vessels drain the back muscles?
venae comitantes - tributaries to occipital, ascending cervical, vertebral, posterior intercostal, lumbar, iliolumbar and lateral sacral veins, most of which have continuity with the vertebral venous plexus
