Superficial Back Flashcards
Name the axioappendicular muscles
Latissimus dosi, levator scapulae, pectoralis major, pectoralis minor, rhomboids, serratus antenor, subclavius, trapezius
What is the function of the axioappendiullar muscle group?
Connect the axial skeleton to the upper extremity appendicular skeleton- provide movement Of upper limbs
What are the bony landmark attachment sites for latissimus dosi?
Lower thoracic spinous process, thoracolumbar fascia & iliac crest, floor of intertubercular sulcus of numerous
What are the bone landmarks as attachment sites for elevator scapulae?
Transverse process of ci-c4, superior angle and superiomedial border of scapulae
Bony landmarks as attachment sites for pectoralis major
Clavicle, costal cartilage, sternum, aponeurosis of external oblique, lateral lip of intertubercular sulcus of humerus
Action of latissimus Dorsi
Adduct humerus, extend humerus, medially rotate humerus
Action of elevator scapulae
Elevate scapula, downwards rotation of scapula
Action of pectoralis major
Addict humerus, flex humerus, medially rotate humerus
What 2 axioappendicular muscles both adduct humerus and medially rotate the humerus and why?
Latissimusdorsi and pectoralismajor. Both attach to intertuberallar sulcus of the humerus
What innovates latissimus dorsi?
Spinal nerves c6-c8, thoracodorsal nerve
What nerves innovate The elevator scapulae
Spinal nerve - c4-c5 (sensory is direct branches from c3-c4 ) and the dorsal scapular nerve
What nerves innovate the pectoralis major
Spinal nerves c5-c6 for the clavicular head, spinal nerves c7-t1 for the sternocostal head, and medial and lateral pectoral nerves
What innervates the rhomboids?
Rhomboids: Spinal nerves C4-C5; dorsal scapular nerve
What innervates the serrated anterior?
Serratus anterior: Spinal nerves C5-C7; long thoracic nerve
What innervates the subclavius?
Subclavius: Spinal nerves: C5-C6; subclavian nerve
What innervates the trapezius?
Trapezius: Spinal nerves: C3-C4 for sensory; Accessory nerve (CN XI)
What are bony landmark attachments for Pectoralis minor?
Outer surfaces of ribs 3-5; Coracoid process
What are bony landmark attachments for rhomboids?
Ligamentum nuchae, spinous process C7-T1; Spinous processes of T2-T5; medial border of scapula
What are the bony landmark attachments for serratus anterior?
Costal surface of medial border of scapula; outer surface & superior borders of upper ribs (1-10)
What are the bony attachment sites for the subclavius
1st rib & cartilage and the undersurface of the clavicle
What are the bony attachments for the trapezius?
Occipital protuberance, Superior nuchal line, ligamentum nuchae, spinous processes of C7-T1; medial border of scapula
Action of Pectoralis minor
Anteriorly tilt of scapula, forced inspiration, depression of shoulder
Action of rhomboids
Retract scapula, downward rotation, elevation of scapula
Action of serratus anterior
Protract scapula, upward rotation of scapula
Action of Subclavius
Depress clavicle, stabilize clavicle
Action of trapezius
Elevate scapula (superior portion), depress scapula (inferior portion) retract scapula (middle portion) upward rotation of scapula (inferior portion), downward rotation of scapula (superior portion)
Extrinsic back muscles (function) & general groups
Provide upper limb movement; provide respiration & proprioception; superficial & intermediate
List the superficial extrinsic back muscles
Superficial extrinsic back muscles: lattisimus dorsi, trapezius, rhomboids, levator scapulae
List the intermediate extrinsic back muscles
Serratus posterior superior, Serratus posterior inferior
Intrinsic back muscles functions & general levels
Provide stabilization, provide movement of vertebral column. Levels: Superficial, intermediate, Deep
List superficial intrinsic back muscles
Splenius capitus & Splenius cervicis
General group name & list the specific intermediate intrinsic back muscles & general
Intermediate intrinsic back muscles: Erector Spinae:
1) Iliocostalis (lateral)
2) Longissimus (middle)
3) Spinalis (medial)
Name the group name for the deep intrinsic back muscles & list individual:
Deep intrinsic back muscles: Transversospinales
1) Semispinales (base of skull —> thoracic vertebrae)
2) Multifidus (whole spinal column)
3) Rotatores (most deep; small little guys)
