Superconductors Flashcards
1
Q
What is a superconductor?
A
A substance capable of becoming superconducting at sufficiently low temperatures.
When cooled below a certain threshold temperature, material loses all electrical resistance
2
Q
What are the conditions needed for superconductors?
A
Cooled to a certain temperature (depends on the material)
3
Q
What is the critical temperature?
A
The temperature at which a conductor becomes a superconductor - when phase shift happens
Tc
4
Q
Why would a room temperature superconductor be significant?
A
Revolutionise
No energy would be needed to cool it to its critical temperature (save money)
5
Q
What are superconductors used in?
A
Large Hadron Collider
MRI Scan
Magnetic levitation trains
Particle Accelerators
