Circuit Basics Flashcards
What is current?
The flow of charged particles
What are charges? (circuits)
Physical matter that flows in a circuit
What is the charge of electrons?
1.6 x 10^-19 C
How many electrons/protons are in 1 Coulomb?
6.25 x 10^18
What is an Amp?
1 Amp = 1 Coulomb flows per second
What is the equation for I?
I=Q/t
What is a volt?
A volt is the amount of energy gained for each Coulomb of charge
What is the equation for V?
V=E/Q
What does resistance do?
Slows down (changes the rate of) flow - doesn't change energy transfer Opposition to current
What is the units for resistance?
Ohms
What is the equation for resistance?
R=V/I
What is ohmic conductor?
Voltage across the component is proportional to current when other variables are controlled.
What is the I-V graph for a wire and why?
Straight diagonal line?
As long as it stays at a constant temperature - ohmic conductor
What is the I-V graph for a filament bulb and why?
S shape
Resistance increases as the lamp becomes hotter and it’s impossible to prevent the temperature change
Not an ohmic conductor
What is EMF?
Electromotive force - energy supplied per coulomb by a cell
