Newton's Laws and Momentum Flashcards
What is Newton’s First Law?
An object will remain at rest or move in a straight line with a constant speed unless acted on by an external force
What is Newton’s Second Law?
The rate of change of momentum of a body is proportional to the force applied to that body and in the direction of the force
Force = mass x acceleration
What is Newton’s Third Law?
Every force between a pair of bodies acts on both, in opposite directions
What type of quantity is momentum?
Vector
What is the equation for momentum?
Momentum (kgms-1) = mass (kg) x velocity (ms-1)
P = mv
What is is conserved in Elastic collision?
Ek and momentum
What is is conserved in Inelastic collision?
Momentum
Ek isn’t
What is Impulse?
The product of the force and the time which the force acts for
What is the equation for Impulse?
Impulse (j) = F/\t = /(mv)
What does the area under the Ft graph show?
Change of momentum
What is Ns the same as?
kg ms-1
Is direction important for momentum, if so why, and how is it show?
Yes
Momentum is a vector
use (+/-) to show
