sunderland questions Flashcards

Q

Why do I want to be a doctor?

A

Medicine is a profession that I have been considering for a while and extracurricular and further readings made me consolidate that this is a path I want to take.

I had always had an interest in the sciences in particular, Biology and Maths. the human body biology has a unique blend of chemical biological and psychological parts to it. this interest led me to research on sickle cell disorder and explore in particular the trials for gene therapy. As medicine is evidence based medicine I would be given the opportunity to learn more which would feed my curiousity.

Maths allows me to be creative and think critically especially when I compete in maths olympiads. similar to how in medicine it is needed to be critical when giving holistic care.

I really enjoy providing help to people. which is one of the reasons why I partook in many volunteering roles. such as being a chef at a food bank. this opportunity allowed me to make a big impact on vulnerable people within my community which medicine is a career that will allow me to do that.

medicine will also give me a wide range of opportunities as well which is ideal for me as I partake in many extracurriculars. For example, medics have the chance to partake in teaching and research.

Q

How would you convince them to have the vaccine?

The members of your class at college have been asked to book COVID vaccinations. A minority of this group has said they won’t get the vaccine as they feel that is of little use to them as they are unlikely to have serious effects from contracting COVID. Two of the students are friends of yours. One stated that they were uncomfortable with the idea of getting an mRNA-based vaccine as they had heard that it “altered their DNA” and the other claimed it was not necessary as they had already had COVID
Knowledge, critical thinking, and empathy
A

To convince them it is important to communicate clearly with the people. I would listen to them to understand their reasons behind their choices before I explain to them the importance of being vaccinated.

A good way to persuade people into getting the vaccine is to use data and facts from reliable sources. it shown many many studies that people are more likely to take medical advice from news stories and scientific articles. with the small minority of people that believe that there is little help to getting vaccinate I would with the group as a whole there is still a risk of complication after recovery, such as long haul covid, losing the ability to taste food. I would also encourage them to take the vaccine because even if they were completely fine after COVID I would say that there are vulnerable people in college and them being vaccinated would protect others around them and I will discuss herd immunity.
For the next person who said that they already caught COVID I would be empathetic to them as they may have been very ill and I would listen to their experiences. I would discuss to them and how COVID like many other viruses such as the flu mutate hence it is necessary to get the vaccine to prevent catching the vaccine.
for the final person person it is clear that they misunderstand how the mRNA vaccine works. I would provide reliable news articles and ask them where they got this information of covid altering their DNA.

If all people still refuse to take the vaccine then it is important to make it clear that I do not agree with their choices but I would respect their own decisions and autonomy.

Q

Give an example of where you have had responsibility for a team or the working of groups -for example you were team leader, co-ordinated the activities of groups of individuals or were responsible for delegating duties to teams.
For your example, explain the role you had, how did you improve the role or take ownership of the role and how what you did improved the working of the team? Your example can either be in the workplace or while volunteering or at school/college/university
You will be asked other questions about your experiences

A

I was given leadership responsibilities as the head of the yearbook club and my main responsibilities were to make sure all members did their part in time so we can complete the book in time. since all member were in different classes we were unable to see each other regularly and discuss what part we are doing. In order to allow for clear communication I set up a teams group chat so if there were any problems the person can quickly tell the group. Since it was also exam season I remembered that it was a stressful time so I highlighted to myself that I should be empathetic. I did this by asking the members on how they feel and made it clear that if there were any struggles they could talk to me. this eventually made the members feel as if they could trust me.

You facetime the family friend and are concerned that they are don’t sound well. You tell the family friend that you will facetime them later to check how they are. Before you call them again you contact the NHS 111 service. After you describe the symptoms to the 111-call handler, they suggest that you call for an ambulance. You know that the family friend is worried about going into hospital as their partner died last year in hospital.
In this role play you are asked to facetime the family friend and attempt to convince them to let you call for an ambulance

Q

Why do you think you should be given a place to student medicine?

A

medicine is a proffession that I have been considering for a while and after gaining insight from extracurriculars and further readings I feel that this is path that I would love to endeavor.

I had always had an interest in the sciences in particular, Biology. the human body biology has a unique blend of chemical biological and psychological parts to it. In medicine there are constant advancement and research being done for example the trials for the use of gene therapy in sickle cell patients. this means that a career in medicine will fuel my curiousity as i am constantly learning.

Another thing that I love about medicine is that love communication and helping people. this is one of the main reasons why I partook in many volunteering roles such as a chef of a foodbank. I felt satification providing high quality meals to people in my community as well as talking to what would be lonely people. being able to being a postitive influence in a person’s life and helping vunerable people gives me a great satifisation which medicine will allow me to do so.

medicine will also give me a wide range of opportunities as well which is ideal for me as I partake in many extracurriculars. For example, medics have the chance to partake in teaching and research. or charity organisations as many of the volunteering programmes that I partook in were lead by the local medical students.

Q

requirements of being a medical student

A

It is important that as a medical student you develop all the qualities needed as a doctor in order to provide patient care.

a key social skill that a medical student must have is communication. this is because in medicine there are many group projects. therefore it is key that students are able to communicate clearly to prevent confusion as well as listening to other members when recieving instructions or to their opinions so members would not feel left out. in a clinical setting students may have to listen and talk to patients as well. for example when I was GP clinic i made sure to greet the patients when they came in to make them feel welcomed and listen to them when they discuss about their concerns.

Resilience is the ability overcome difficult situations as a medical student. As a medical student there are many uncertainties when working in a clinical settings

empathetic , as a team , etc.

Q

importance of patient confidentiality

A

confidentiality is when doctors and healthcare professionals keep patient intimate information private. this is important as it allows patients and doctors to be able to have good relationship as patients are able to trust doctors. It also encourages better healthcare to patients as they are more likely to tell doctors their conditions. in this case by keeping patient confidentiality private it may help to keep his autonomy as he may not want people in his family to change his opinions about whether he wants to donate his organs.

Q

example of keeping patient confidentiality.

A

When I went to shadow a GP, a patient had a phone call appointment with the GP. one way that the GP made sure to keep confidentiality was kept was to tell the patient prior to the appointment whether they felt comfortable for a student to be in the room. This showed that the doctor was honest and the patient is able to trust the doctor more which builds onto their relationship.

Q

what would you do if their family ask for his information

A

If the family and daughter asks for his information it is important that unless stated otherwise by the patient that you are allowed to disclose that you must inform them that you are unable to tell his information with his consent.

17
Q

what to do if he cannot consent

A

If he is unable to provide informed consent then it is important that doctors should look to see if he had written a care before he reaches this point of health. In his care plan if it had included lasting power of attorney . this person would then help to make decisions for him. in the plan he may include other descions such as healthcare treatments that he may refuse.

18
Q

pro vs not given organs.

A

Justice, everyone is treated equally.

benefience- to good ,

freedom- autonomy, religious etc.

19
Q

cancer

A

there are many people who would be involved with the care of this patient. It says that they are in accidents and emergencies due to their complications with cancer. at first the patient would meet the triage nurses who assess their condition.
The patient may then see a nurse who would then take their blood pressure and temperatures. at this point the nurse may gather information to then pass onto the doctor or specialist nurse.
The patient will then meet the AE doctor who would help the patient. for example the complications may be due to an infection caused my surgery and give the patient medication. The doctor would also check the patients notes as well and add onto it as well.
for example a family friend is going through a brain tumour and had to go to AE due to tremors. it turns out that the tremors were caused by the diet which the dietian then had to change.

Q

organ

A

in the Uk it has an optout system when it comes to organ donations. this means everyone above the age of 18 and can provide informed consent are organ donors. this was done to overcome the organ shortage, individuals who want to donate organs can easily sign up online and get a card. this means that if in a situation where they die and can give organs it would be done in in the patients favor and not in their families.

Q

sunderland

A

there are many reasons why I chose to apply for sunderland. my first reason why I decided to apply to this school is that it has the living lab. this gives students a early experience to clinical work which will help them to be more confident in their communication skills.
I also liked how the course is intergrated, this means that I will be able to able to choose to be able to research more on a specific scientific field more which would give new idea
