Here are the steps to follow when writing a summary:

  1. Read the passage through completely to understand the line of thought.
  2. Underline the main points of the article. The main points are factual or general statements that should be stripped of any explanations or examples.
  3. Rewrite these main points in a list (for a point-form summary) and a paragraph (for a prΓ©cis summary) and, more importantly, in your own words.

  1. Avoid repetition or redundancy.
  2. Avoid examples, illustrations and experiments.
  3. Avoid figures of speech.
  4. Avoid quotes or direct speech.
  5. Avoid personal opinions and generalizations.
  6. Avoid lists of adjectives.
  7. Avoid information in brackets.
  8. Avoid hyphens and contractions.
  9. Avoid slang.
  10. Use one word in place of a phrase or a phrase instead of a clause.
