2. Underline the main points of the article. The main points are factual or general statements that should be stripped of any explanations or examples.
3. Rewrite these main points in a list (for a point-form summary) and a paragraph (for a précis summary) and, more importantly, in your own words.

4. Avoid quotes or direct speech.
5. Avoid personal opinions and generalizations.
6. Avoid lists of adjectives.
7. Avoid information in brackets.
8. Avoid hyphens and contractions.
9. Avoid slang.
10. Use one word in place of a phrase or a phrase instead of a clause.
